I'd love to know a bit more about the troubles you're having with SmartScan, if you wouldn't mind sharing a bit.
In regard to SmartScan, you can stop a SmartScan and enter the expense details manually, by using the "Fill out details" button on the receipt. (below)
Additionally, SmartScan is controlled in the Account Settings and can be disabled by logging into your account using a web browser. (below)
