Expense reimbursement cancellation

The day after I reimbursed an employee for an expense report, he told me that the vendor refunded the state sales tax. I canceled the reimbursement and the expense report was modified to the new amount.
How long does it take for the cancellation to happen? How do I find out if it was successful? It appears that I cannot reimburse until the modified expense report if the cancellation is pending.
