Scanned Receipt vs. Picture Receipt

in Ideas
The OneDrive app has a cool feature where a receipt can be scanned as a document instead of taking a regular picture. The app recognizes the dimensions of the receipt and only captures that image when you scan it, it won't include the background image like a desk, table, etc. It makes it possible to see all the details of a long receipt as well so you don't have to take multiple pictures.
Would love if Expensify would offer a feature like this on their mobile app!

@Svillanueva can I ask what about the current camera in the Expensify app prevents you from taking a picture of a long receipt. As long as the text remains legible even when zoomed in, this shouldn't prevent SmartScan from reading it.

I'm especially intrigued as to what it is about this ^ which adds functionality for you. Does the background somehow impede the images of receipts for you?

0 · Accept Answer Off Topic Insightful Vote Up Awesome@Ted Harris As a nonprofit we have to submit many of our scanned receipts to funders for reimbursement. A picture of a long receipt far away may not be a problem for the Smartscan feature but our funders and auditors would not enjoy having to zoom in on multiple receipts to see the details.
In regards to your second question, it is not so much a question of functionality but rather how professional an image looks. It doesn't always look great to have a background picture of someone's couch or rug as they take a picture of their receipt๐

It's not a requirement to get your couch in shot when SmartScanning (unless you're really proud of it), but if you are seeing inappropriate or poorly taken photographs you can let the submitter know via a Report Comment.
On your first point, SmartScan picks up the Merchant, Date and Amount and displays it visibly, so the need to zoom in should be pretty minimal. Right? Thanks!
